Free After-School Filmmaking in Brooklyn: Reel Works Gives NYC Teens a Voice on Screen

Reel Works is one of Brooklyn’s leading after-school film programs, giving New York City teens the opportunity to tell their own stories through film. Our free filmmaking labs are designed for NYC students, ages 14–19, interested in learning the art of storytelling while gaining confidence, technical skills, and mentorship from professional filmmakers.

A Pathway Into Filmmaking for NYC Teens

For many young people, becoming a filmmaker can feel out of reach. Reel Works changes that. Based in Brooklyn, our after-school filmmaking programs make professional training accessible — no prior experience or expensive equipment required. Students learn every step of the process, from writing and shooting to editing and screening their final films. Along the way, they build essential life skills like collaboration, problem-solving, and leadership.

Before joining Reel Works, I didn’t know much about writing. My focus had always been on post-production. Reel Works gave me the tools and guidance to grow in pre-production and screenwriting, which has been incredibly valuable.
— Benjamin Baker Singh

Our programs are more than classes; they’re a supportive community where teens find their voices and explore the issues that matter most to them: from family and identity to immigration, and social justice. Learn more about our current labs.

One-on-One Mentorship in Filmmaking

Reel Works is the only after-school film program in NYC built on a one-on-one mentorship model. Each student is paired with a professional filmmaker who provides hands-on guidance, creative feedback, and real-world industry insight. These mentors teach technical skills, inspire experimentation, and discover their unique storytelling voice.

I met with my mentor every Monday to talk through my script, directing, and every stage of my film. Those sessions taught me how to be more confident as a director — from leading production meetings to knowing what to prepare for on set and what to expect in the process ahead.
— Violet Gallo

From NYC Classrooms to Film Festivals

A majority of Reel Works programs culminate in a public screening, where students present their films to peers, families, and the local community. These premieres are powerful celebrations of creativity and for many filmmakers, the first time they see their work on the big screen.

Alumni from Reel Works have gone on to screen at film festivals, attend top universities, and build careers in film, television, and digital media. Whether students pursue creative careers or apply their skills in other industries, Reel Works equips them with tools for success.
