Behind-the-scenes photos and videos do more than just document events: they reveal the process behind the final product. Whether you're capturing a student film set, a nonprofit event, or your own creative project, BTS content helps build authenticity, trust, and engagement. At Reel Works, we’ve seen firsthand how powerful BTS storytelling can be for filmmakers and organizations alike. Here’s a simple, step-by-step guide to help you capture stronger BTS moments—using nothing more than your phone.

Step 1: Set Up Your Phone Correctly

For iPhone

  • Go to Settings → Camera → Record Video

  • Select 4K at 30 fps for sharp, professional footage, or 1080p if storage is limited

  • Turn on the Grid in Camera Settings for better framing

Note: 4K video can take up a lot of space on your phone. You might want to switch back to 1080p for personal videos

For Android

  • Open the Camera app, switch to Video mode

  • Tap the settings icon to adjust resolution and fps

  • Select the highest resolution your phone can handle smoothly

  • Enable the Grid if available for cleaner composition

Pro Tip: Keep your lens clean—your shots will instantly look sharper.

Step 2: Think About Composition

Phone settings are important, but composition is what tells the story.

  • Rule of Thirds: Use your grid to place subjects slightly off-center

  • Lead Room: Leave space in the direction someone is moving or looking

  • Check the background and remove clutter

  • Use low angles for drama and high angles for context

  • Stay Steady: Use two hands, lean against something, or rest your elbows on a surface

Step 3: Capture Real Moments

The magic of BTS is authenticity. Look for unscripted, candid moments:

  • Film people in action (adjusting lights, checking monitors, rehearsing)

  • Close-up details (hands clapping a slate, a laugh between takes)

  • Vary your shots:

    • Wide — Show the full environment

    • Medium — Capture action and interactions

    • Close-ups — Highlight expressions and emotional beats

Capture slice-of-life moments instead of staged portraits.

Step 4: Build a Highlight Reel

Turn your footage into a short, engaging story.

  • Select 10–20 seconds that capture the story

  • Keep it short and focused—ideal for social media

  • Add context (names, project title, location)

  • Use natural sound or add music

Step 5: Share It Where It Counts

Each platform favors a different format.

  • Instagram, TikTok, Reels → Vertical video (9:16)

  • YouTube, websites → Horizontal video (16:9)

  • Tag collaborators, mentors, and organizations involved

  • Use project-specific hashtags for discoverability

The Bigger Picture

At Reel Works, BTS isn’t just content. It’s storytelling. When our young filmmakers share the process, they show what it truly takes to bring a story to life. That transparency builds connection, curiosity, and respect for the creative journey.

Every BTS shot tells a story. Make yours count.
