Teaching the Next Generation of Filmmakers in New York City

Gerson Legend, a Bronx filmmaker and Reel Works teaching artist, never imagined that filming music videos for friends would lead him to inspire the next generation of storytellers. Today, he helps students across New York City discover their voice through film, mentorship, and hands-on training.

From Bronx Filmmaker to Reel Works Teaching Artist

Industry peers pointed Gerson to Reel Works, where he discovered that his versatility from interior design to sports photography, could open doors to unexpected opportunities. That journey took him to places like Showtime and Paramount.

“I went to school wanting to be a better storyteller and video editor in my neighborhood.” Gerson said. “I didn't think that a company like Paramount wanted me in their building since I didn't know anybody. But Reel Works helped me recognize that the skills that I acquired over my career were transferable to various jobs.”

Mentorship and Media Training for NYC Students

Gerson returned to Reel Works as a teaching artist, where he brought his experiences working as a production assistant, writer, and producer for big studios into the classroom. He’s led programs at the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice (MOCJ) and Bronx High School for the Visual Arts, connecting with students across New York City. For him, the role is deeply personal.

My growth is their growth. Being a New Yorker, I understand the importance of relating to my students. The best way to connect is meeting them where they’re at. I want them to see that they can be in those spaces, too.

Student Impact Through Storytelling: The Short Film Click

That philosophy came to life when he guided students in creating Click, a short film unpacking the impact of gun violence. At first, Gerson worried he wasn’t getting through to his students. But as students worked on the project, he saw how much they had absorbed. During the screening, one student announced he wanted to buy a camera and start telling his own stories.
