Storytelling in Action: A Look Back at Our Spring After School Highlights
This spring, Reel Works wrapped up its after school programs with a joyful mix of creativity, collaboration, and community—showcasing the talents and growth of our incredible young filmmakers.
GIRLS WRITE NOW X REEL WORKS: Merging Story & Screen
In partnership with Girls Write Now, students explored the intersection of scriptwriting and mobile filmmaking in a powerful two-hour workshop. Using only their smartphones, participants transformed personal stories into visually compelling scenes—learning about framing, composition, and narrative structure along the way. By the end, each student had created a short, self-produced film that brought their story to life.
CLOSING THE YEAR WITH COMMUNITY: Mentor Mixer at Finback Brooklyn
We closed the school year in style with our annual Mentor Mixer. Held at Finback Brooklyn, this relaxed gathering brought together mentors to celebrate their students’ achievements and connect with one another. It was a moment to reflect, share stories, and end the season with gratitude and community.
Animating Imagination at The Met
Reel Works also joined The Met for the citywide “Teens Take The Met” event, where teens were introduced to 2D animation through a hands-on demo led by teaching artist Nelson. In just 15 minutes, students used Adobe Animate and keyframes to give life to Bob—a playful blob character who could jump, smile, and grow limbs. This fun and fast-paced session offered a sneak peek into the creative possibilities of our upcoming Summer Animation Lab.
Vanessa Cruz, the 2025 F. John Outcalt Award Winner
We couldn’t end the season without celebrating one of our brightest rising stars—Vanessa Cruz, the winner of the 2025 F. John Outcalt Award for Outstanding Filmmaking. Her short documentary, The Making of a Matriarch, is a moving portrait of legacy, migration, and generational leadership. Vanessa’s work exemplifies the heart of Reel Works: storytelling that inspires, uplifts, and sparks change.
“It is my hope – like many who have come before me — I will create stories that inspire change, and build themes of community, empowerment, and self-discovery. There’s so much love, laughter, and belonging in our communities that deserve to be seen on screen.” - Vanessa Cruz
We’re so proud of all the young creatives who participated in our spring programming. Stay tuned for what’s next this summer—we’re just getting started.
