The Studio at Reel Works Powers the 2025 ChangeMakers Gala
On May 21, Manhattan’s Ziegfeld Ballroom transformed into a celebration of youth creativity and storytelling. The 2025 ChangeMakers Gala, hosted by Reel Works, highlighted the transformative power of teen filmmaking.
At the heart of this event was The Studio at Reel Works, an Emmy-winning, youth-led production company that brought the evening to life.
Behind the Scenes: Centering Teen Filmmakers
Preparation for the Gala began months in advance. The Studio’s team conducted in-depth interviews with nominees for the F. John Outcalt Award for Outstanding Filmmaking and alumni of Reel Works programs. These conversations showcased students’ passions, projects, and aspirations, ensuring their authenticity was at the forefront of the evening.
Elevating the Experience: Innovative Visuals and Sound
This year, The Studio introduced large-scale side-wall projections enhanced with custom animations and sound design. These immersive elements celebrated the student filmmakers, adding depth and vibrancy to the Gala’s atmosphere. Every visual and auditory detail was meticulously crafted to honor the stories being told.
Live Production: Capturing the Gala in Real-Time
Every year, The Studio operates the Gala as a live production set. This year, the team arrived early to set up cameras, editing stations, and equipment. Roaming videographers captured candid moments, while stationary cameras documented speeches and performances. Footage was transferred and edited on the fly, culminating in a highlight reel showcased at the event’s conclusion.
A key contributor was Khalid Khalfani, a Studio apprentice who managed the swift transfer of SD cards between camera operators and the editing team. His role was pivotal in delivering the live highlight reel that encapsulated the evening’s essence.
