How Data Powers NYC Youth Filmmakers: Vamshi’s Journey at Reel Works

Building a Data-Driven Organization Starts with People

At Reel Works, data is a storytelling tool that amplifies the voices of emerging filmmakers across New York City. Vamshi Krishna Bangaru knows this firsthand. What started as a three-month internship evolved into a career-defining role as Data Integration Analyst, helping to strengthen the systems that track student success and program impact.

Originally from India, Vamshi moved to New York to pursue a master’s degree in data science. A lifelong movie fan, he was immediately drawn to Reel Works’ mission to empower the next generation of filmmakers. His prior experience with Salesforce gave him an edge, but it was the classroom energy that inspired him.

Seeing the students work in real-time showed me exactly what data matters.

Why Centralized Data Matters for NYC Youth-Serving Nonprofits

When Vamshi joined, data was scattered across departments, each program tracked outcomes in its own way. As Reel Works grew, so did the gaps in its data systems.

“It wasn’t sustainable,” Vamshi explains. “Everyone was doing things differently, and it became hard to pull accurate information when it mattered most.”

With mentorship from the Director of Data and Impact Abby Verbosky, Vamshi helped launch a new department dedicated to streamlining workflows across programs, from Train & Earn to MediaMKRS.

The goal? One system. A single workflow. One source of data.

“If departments aren’t aligned, data gets messy. But with unified tools and consistent workflows, we can track student success in real-time and respond faster to opportunities,” says Vamshi.

Turning Data into a Tool for Student Success

For Vamshi, data collection is the starting point. The real transformation lies in using data to tell the story of Reel Works’ impact.

Whether it’s highlighting student achievements, identifying gaps in programming, or informing fundraising strategies, the Data & Impact team plays a critical role in shaping the future of Reel Works.

“We are moving towards an organization that makes decisions based on data,” says Vamshi. “And that means making sure every student’s story is visible.”

Professional Growth Through Nonprofit Work Experience

Transitioning to a new country and work culture was daunting at first.

“I was nervous to speak up in meetings,” Vamshi admits. “Now, I lead major projects and collaborate across departments.”

Through Abby’s mentorship, Vamshi gained confidence, leadership skills, and a deeper understanding of nonprofit impact.
