Embracing Creativity and Community at Reel Works: A Conversation with Simone

Nina Simone Moore is the Office Coordinator at Reel Works, where she plays a pivotal role in ensuring the seamless operation of day-to-day activities. In a recent conversation, Simone shared her journey from Atlanta, Georgia to Brooklyn, New York, the impact of her work at Reel Works, and her future project that seeks to honor her grandmother's legacy through multimodal storytelling.

Simone's extensive experience in the film and television sector spans over 15 years and ranges from independent projects to studio productions. Starting out reading scripts as an Office Production Assistant, she’s now a Writer and Producer for independent films and shows. Despite the industry challenges of gig-economy, her transition to Reel Works has been marked by meaningful contributions and a lasting impact.

Simone's intrinsic attention to detail shines beyond her administrative responsibilities at Reel Works, informing her work in and out of the office. She explained, "As someone who pays attention to details and identifies as a storyteller, I gravitate towards many mediums, mainly written or performance-based. That concept of character study, whether you're becoming a character or writing one, requires a nuance that I enjoy. I like world-building. I like knowing how a life event a character experienced at 10 shapes why she's having this interaction with somebody in her 20s. I enjoy story arcs over time. I enjoy character progression, so I tend to be more episodic when I write versus long-form features."

In her personal life, Simone employs a multimodal approach to storytelling. Currently, she is working on a historical anthology through the context of quiltmaking. The work is an attempt to preserve her family’s legacy through a skill that’s gone dormant in recent generations. She plans to incorporate photos of her elders into the fabric to create a tangible family tree for future generations to reference. By practicing an interdisciplinary approach to storytelling, Simone can authentically memorialize her family's network of influences. At its core, Simone's work prioritizes the preservation of memory.

More recently, Simone's multifaceted talents and collaborative nature have culminated in her mentorship of a Narrative Fellow at Reel Works, embodying her belief in the transformative power of storytelling and knowledge sharing. This venture enables Simone to engage in a meaningful relationship with a young filmmaker as they produce their first short films.

Join us in acknowledging Simone Moore's outstanding contributions to Reel Works and her unwavering commitment to fostering creativity and storytelling excellence.
