Reel Works 48-Hour Film Challenge

Reel Works held a 48-hour film challenge with students from all across our community who signed up for various roles such as screenwriter, director, producer, cinematographer and editor. The challenge was a fun activity and creative outlet that was supported by professional filmmaker mentors who assisted the students every step of the way!

Each team received a theme to produce their own story within the weekend. In one of the teams, Cesar, Shan, Quintin, Maya, and Tory worked together on a short film about the effects of very strong caffeine. Professional filmmaker-mentor Vadim supported them throughout the production process and figuring out various shots.

One of the screenwriters and editors, Daphne Castro, shared her experience collaborating with her peers: “Coming up with the story was fun, and I received a lot of editing tips from my group's mentor like organization and how to sync properly. I was surprised at how difficult it was to actually complete [the challenge within 48 hours].”

In addition to signing up for filmmaking roles, we also got students involved by having them act in each other’s films. Zhi Hui (Michael) Chen shared, “My favorite part of the weekend is when I got to act in our film. I had a lot of fun. Something I'll take away from this experience is being able to work with a mentor and other students during the 48-Film Challenge. We had great cooperation with each other and everyone was involved!”

At the end of the challenge, students got together to screen the finished films at Reel Works.

Reel Works Youth Ambassadors made this event possible and will continue to orchestrate regular events for students to participate in!
