The Master Lab is for advanced young filmmakers who want to learn how to write, produce, cast, shoot and edit original short narrative films. The course is divided into two sections: Screenwriting and Production.
The Screenwriting Workshop centers on the shape of short narrative filmmaking. Students study examples of great film storytelling as they breakdown the elements of dramatic writing - character, conflict and the three-act structure. Each student develops an original short film idea from concept to completed script. The screenwriting workshop culminates in a reading of each screenplay before a live audience.
The Production Workshop chooses the best screenplay and transforms it into a finished film. Students learn the craft of narrative filmmaking, including cinematography, lighting, sound, directing and all the roles of a production crew. Students are assigned roles in the production as they prepare, film and edit an original short film. The Production Workshop culminates in a screening of the finished film at the Spring Lab graduation.
The Master Lab is open to high school students who are graduates of The Lab, The Summer Lab or similarly rigorous filmmaking programs in schools or other after-school programs. Applicants may be asked to provide samples of their work.
The Master Lab meets Mondays & Fridays, 4pm-6pm, at Reel Works. Students' writing and filmmaking takes place between classes.
